A Towson-based attorney has pleaded guilty to federal bank fraud conspiracy charges, acknowledging his role in a multi-year scheme that defrauded financial institutions during real estate transactions in the Baltimore area. The guilty plea was entered in U.S. District Court on Wednesday.
Federal prosecutors detailed a complex plot where the attorney, leveraging his professional standing and knowledge, facilitated fraudulent loan applications and settlement documents. The scheme involved the use of straw buyers and inflated property values to illicitly obtain mortgage funds from lenders. These actions caused substantial financial losses to the banks involved and undermined the integrity of local real estate transactions.
The conspiracy spanned several years and involved multiple properties. By pleading guilty, the attorney now faces a potential maximum sentence of thirty years in federal prison. Sentencing has been scheduled for a later date, where a federal judge will consider the full extent of the financial harm and the defendant's admission of guilt. The investigation was conducted by federal agencies, highlighting continued scrutiny of white-collar crime within the region's real estate and legal sectors.
