Kaplan Construction has broken ground on McDevitt Senior Homes, a 15.7 million dollar adaptive reuse project in South Boston. The development will convert a former convent into 36 affordable apartments reserved for seniors, addressing a persistent need for housing options that serve older residents with limited incomes.
The project centers on the reuse of an existing structure rather than new construction, a approach that preserves the building's original character while reducing waste and construction time. Crews will reconfigure the interior to create modern living spaces while keeping the exterior largely intact. The design aims to blend the updated housing with the surrounding neighborhood, which has seen rising costs push many long time residents out.
Funding for the 15.7 million dollar effort comes from a mix of public and private sources, including affordable housing programs and local support. Once finished, the building will offer units to seniors who meet income requirements, giving them a stable place to live close to services and transit.
Construction is expected to take roughly a year, with residents moving in after final inspections. For South Boston, the project represents one small but concrete step toward keeping the area accessible to people who have called it home for decades.
