A troubling new trend is emerging in online home listings, leaving both agents and potential buyers wary. Dubbed "housefishing," the practice involves using artificial intelligence to digitally enhance or completely fabricate images of properties for sale, often crossing the line from helpful visualization into outright deception.
The issue arises when AI is used not just to brighten a room or tidy a space, but to materially alter a property's reality. Examples include digitally replacing drab, worn carpet with gleaming hardwood floors, generating non-existent backyard landscaping, or erasing major eyesores like power lines. While virtual staging of empty rooms has been common for years, the new AI tools create hyper-realistic images that can be difficult to distinguish from genuine photographs.
Real estate professionals report that this misrepresentation wastes everyone's time. Buyers feel misled upon visiting a home that looks nothing like its polished online listing, while honest agents must manage disappointed clients. The practice also raises significant ethical and legal questions about transparency in advertising. Industry guidelines require clear disclosure of digitally altered images, but these rules are often ignored in the competitive rush to attract clicks and offers. As AI technology becomes more accessible, the call for stricter enforcement and consumer awareness is growing louder to ensure the home buying process remains grounded in reality.
