The National Association of Realtors is raising concerns over the White House's plan to slash funding for several federal housing programs in the upcoming budget. According to NAR, the proposed cuts target resources like Fair Housing assistance and Community Development Block Grants, which the group says are essential for helping low-income families and first-time buyers.
The White House has reportedly labeled some of these programs as "woke" initiatives, signaling a shift in priorities. But NAR argues that eliminating or reducing these funds would directly impact local communities that rely on them for affordable housing development, rental assistance, and anti-discrimination enforcement.
NAR President Kevin Sears stated that the cuts would be a step backward for housing equity. He emphasized that programs like CDBG have a long track record of creating jobs, improving infrastructure, and stabilizing neighborhoods. Without them, many cities and rural areas would struggle to address growing housing shortages.
The real estate group is now urging lawmakers to protect these programs during budget negotiations. NAR plans to mobilize its members to lobby Congress, warning that the proposed reductions could worsen the nation's affordability crisis. The final budget is expected to be debated in the coming weeks.
