WORCESTER - The Massachusetts Clean Water Trust and State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg marked a historic milestone, surpassing $10 billion in water infrastructure loans provided to cities, towns, and water utilities across the state.
The announcement highlights years of steady investment in drinking water and wastewater systems. The loan program helps communities finance repairs, upgrades, and new construction for aging infrastructure, often at below-market rates. Officials said the funding has supported projects in every region of Massachusetts, from small towns to major urban centers.
Goldberg said the milestone reflects a long-term commitment to public health and environmental protection. Clean water systems are essential to daily life, and the trust's lending has allowed many municipalities to move forward on projects that might otherwise have stalled due to cost.
The trust works with local governments to structure affordable financing, and borrowers repay the loans over time, allowing the fund to revolve and support future projects. Officials noted that the program has helped address contaminants, replace failing pipes, and improve treatment capacity.
Local leaders welcomed the news, saying the financing has been critical for maintaining safe and reliable water service. The trust said it will continue working with communities to identify needs and fund priority projects in the years ahead.
