A 50-year-old real estate agent has opened up about his decision to leave California behind, trading the state's politics and soaring cost of living for a quieter life in rural Idaho. But the move wasn't a full break. He still works in California, flying or driving back and forth several times a month to close deals and meet clients. He calls himself a supercommuter, and he says the setup has been a game changer for his family.
The agent, who asked to keep his name private to avoid upsetting clients, said the final straw was watching his monthly expenses climb with no end in sight. Housing, gas, and groceries were eating up his income. At the same time, he felt worn down by the constant political battles and the crowded, fast-paced lifestyle. He wanted his kids to grow up with more space, cheaper living, and a slower rhythm.
So he packed up his family and bought a home in a small Idaho town where the air is cleaner and the neighbors actually wave. The commute is long, but he says it works. He schedules his California trips for a few days at a time, staying with friends or in a modest rental. The money he saves on everyday costs more than covers the travel expenses.
He admits it is not for everyone. The separation from his work life can be stressful, and he misses the convenience of being close to his listings. But he says the tradeoff is worth it. His kids have room to roam, his wife is happier, and he finally feels like he can breathe. He still earns his living in California, but he no longer has to live there to enjoy the benefits. For him, that is the real win.
