Bill Creevey cannot make sense of the numbers. The Frazer Township supervisor has watched for years as the Pittsburgh Mills mall crumbled under the control of Namdar Realty Group. The company now holds hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid building code fines tied to the mall's decaying structure and its crater-filled parking lots. Yet Namdar has just taken over the mortgage on the nearby Gateway Center property, leaving local officials baffled and worried.
Creevey questions how a firm that let one major commercial site fall into such disrepair can be trusted with another. The Gateway Center, already struggling with vacancy and maintenance issues, now faces an uncertain path forward. Township leaders fear a repeat of the Pittsburgh Mills situation, where code violations piled up and nothing got fixed. Residents remember the promises made years ago, promises that never materialized as the mall's roof leaked and asphalt turned to gravel.
Namdar has not outlined any specific plans for the Gateway Center. Local officials are left guessing whether the company will invest in improvements or let the property slide further. The mortgage takeover happened quietly, with no public announcement or community meeting. Creevey says he is tired of watching big real estate firms play games with local landmarks while taxpayers absorb the cost of neglect. For now, the Gateway Center's future remains a question mark, and nobody in Frazer Township feels optimistic about the answer.
