Fresno man sentenced for $9M real estate scheme

A Fresno man will spend over four years in federal prison for running a Ponzi scheme that swindled investors out of roughly nine million dollars. Michael Campbell, 43, was sentenced on Tuesday to 52 months behind bars, according to court records.

Campbell pleaded guilty earlier this year to wire fraud charges. He admitted to luring victims with promises of high returns from real estate investments, but instead of putting the money into properties, he used new investor funds to pay off earlier backers. That classic Ponzi structure collapsed when the flow of new money dried up.

Prosecutors said Campbell targeted friends, family members, and fellow churchgoers, gaining their trust before convincing them to hand over large sums. Some victims lost their life savings, retirement accounts, and home equity. In total, investigators identified more than 30 people who were defrauded over a period of several years.

The sentence also includes three years of supervised release after Campbell gets out of prison. A judge ordered him to pay full restitution, though it is unclear how much of the stolen money can actually be recovered. Many of the assets Campbell claimed to own were either nonexistent or already spent.

Campbell's attorney argued in court filings that his client was under financial pressure and made terrible decisions, but the judge noted the deliberate and sustained nature of the deception. The case was investigated by the FBI and the Fresno Police Department's financial crimes unit.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California handled the prosecution. Campbell is scheduled to surrender to federal authorities in early January to begin serving his sentence.
