China's new home prices fell again in August, extending a slump that has weighed on the broader economy and complicated efforts to spark a durable recovery. According to data released on Monday, prices declined across major cities, reflecting soft demand and cautious buyers who remain worried about unfinished projects and falling values. The persistent weakness in housing, long a pillar of household wealth and local government revenue, suggests the economy will struggle to generate momentum from construction, property sales, and related industries.
The decline comes despite a series of support measures introduced over the past year, including lower mortgage rates, reduced down payment requirements, and relaxed purchase restrictions in many cities. Those steps have yet to reverse the downturn. Developers remain under financial strain, and many buyers are holding off, expecting prices to fall further or preferring to wait until confidence returns.
Economists say the property sector's troubles ripple outward. Weaker home prices dampen consumer spending, reduce investment, and limit local government income from land sales. That combination makes it harder for Beijing to hit its growth targets without additional stimulus. Analysts expect more targeted support in the coming months, but few predict a quick turnaround. For now, the housing market remains a drag on an economy already facing soft exports and uneven domestic demand.
