At The Indy 500, The Most Valuable Real Estate Is The Front Row

INDIANAPOLIS -- A look back at Indianapolis 500 results from 2018 through 2025 reveals a tight technical battle between Honda and Chevrolet, but the most consistent advantage belongs to the drivers who start up front. Over those eight races, front-row starters have converted their qualifying speed into a clear edge on race day, both in terms of trophies and prize money.

The data shows that Honda and Chevrolet have traded wins almost evenly during that span, with neither manufacturer establishing long-term dominance. However, the starting position tells a sharper story. In six of the eight races, the eventual winner came from the first two rows, and four of those winners started on the front row itself. The financial payoff is just as stark. The pole sitter and the other front-row starters have collected a disproportionate share of the purse, often earning several hundred thousand dollars more than drivers starting further back.

This trend reinforces the old racing axiom that you cannot win the race on the first lap, but you can certainly lose it. A front-row start provides clean air, track position, and a better chance to avoid the early-race chaos that often eliminates contenders from the middle of the pack. While the engine war between Honda and Chevrolet remains a dead heat, the battle for the front row at Indianapolis has become the most valuable real estate in motorsports, where a few tenths of a second in qualifying can translate into a seven-figure payday and a shot at the Borg-Warner Trophy.
