Alaska Railroad Promotes Real Estate Director

The Alaska Railroad Corporation has moved Kristen Gratrix into its top real estate position. Gratrix, who previously served as Manager of Real Estate Contracts, now holds the title of Real Estate Director. The promotion places her in charge of the railroad's property holdings, leasing activity, and land use agreements across its roughly 500 mile corridor.

Gratrix brings years of contract management experience to the role. Her earlier work involved negotiating agreements with shippers, tenants, and other parties using railroad land. That background gives her a close view of how the corporation balances commercial development with its core transportation mission.

The railroad owns significant acreage along its route from Seward to Fairbanks, including depot properties, industrial yards, and undeveloped parcels. Managing those assets requires attention to both revenue and public interest. As director, Gratrix will oversee appraisals, easements, permits, and long term leases that support freight and passenger operations.

Company officials described the appointment as an internal step that keeps institutional knowledge in place. Gratrix takes over at a time when demand for rail adjacent property remains steady, particularly near Anchorage and the Matanuska Susitna Borough. Her priorities will likely include streamlining lease processes and identifying underused land that could serve new purposes.
